You might be surprised to know that the incidence of elder fraud and abuse in the United States is actually more common than you think. Because the elderly can often be easily manipulated and taken advantage of they represent a highly targeted group for crime and abuse.
Types of fraud and abuse vary from emotional abuse which can be often undetected to inflicting physical harm on an elderly person. There are however several things you can do to prevent fraud and abuse for a loved one who has home care services brought into their home. Those activities include the following:
The first line of defense in preventing elder abuse is having a strong and open communication between you and your loved one. Check in regularly with him/her about the care they are receiving. Make it known and clear to the careprovider that you are involved. Ask to be updated often when conditions change. Also, some individuals are now installing in home camera monitoring devices to watch the daily activities in the home of their loved one. You can even monitor activities from your laptop at home. When monitoring activities it’s important to be aware of signs of abuse. These signs may include the following:
* Communication shut down by the elder
* Lack of interest by the elder. Lethargy.
* Issues with personal hygiene
* Weight loss/weight gain
* Unexplained and re occurring bruises and injuries
* Dirty House
Prior to hiring an in home caregiver make sure you get a copy of their driver’s license and ask if they are bonded and insured. There are also many on line background checking companies that could criminal background checks on the individual as well.
In addition to protecting your loved one against emotional and physical abuse it’s also important to protect them financially from fraud. Some helpful tips are:
* Keep a safe in the house for personal records and valuables.
* Make sure mail is only collected by someone you trust or set up a P.O. Box that only you can access if you are within driving distance of the elder.
* Check Bills for spikes in charges.
* Set up fraud protection/flags with the banks and credit cards your elder uses to flag unusual charges.

Help answer the question about home care
How much is in-home care versus a nursing home?My mom has early-onset Alzheimer's, and we had to remove her from her current assisted living home. We would like to keep her at home for the time being, however, my sisters don't believe me when I say that it costs more for her to be at home than IN a home. Does MEDICAID cover in home care?
She's only 61, and is pretty much in the second to last stage of the disease, so would require assistance with dressing, bathing, eating, etc..
Thank you!

When families are not medical people or experienced in this type of care, it is easy for unscrupulous people to take advantage. When a family wants only what is best for their loved one, these people know just what to say to "reel them in". It is cruel, and unethical.
I would report them to your local center on aging, you mother's physician, the states' attorney general, your local dept. of health, the better business bureau, and anyone else you can think of.
Be prepared to become frustrated at the lack of concern by others, and the inability to do anything significant to this agency. These people have a way of skewing the facts and making everything look good on paper. Even making it appear that you had unreasonable expectations, or that it was some how your fault.
In the future I would keep day to day documentation, and daily phone contact with the agency as well as the care givers. You want to make absolutely sure the care givers and their supervisors and you are on the same page, and do not be afraid to let them know every single time you are dissatisfied with the care.
All agencies charge the client about twice the amount they pay their staff doing the actual care. The money goes to pay for the rent of the building,the scheduling and office staff and of course,the owner.
I've worked in health care all my life and I understand your frustration. They really aren't committing fraud by law.
Very compelling video Tom. Despite the challenge of “capturing” the care and concern you show your clients in a 2 minute video – you managed to do it. Impressive – just like your service. Jinah Kim
Barton Home Care – by far one of the best in-home care companies in the Denver metro area.
It's probably designed that way. Besides, the efficiency of the government is laughable.
I think Tom Barton has an excellent gift of understanding seniors – their needs and wants and then doing a great match with a companion. I would trust my parents to Barton Home Care and would recommend them to any of my friends. Their lives will be fullfilled in many ways to be able to stay in their own homes and have a routine that they like. We all prefer our own homes over the alternatives.

Medicaid is not run by the federal govt. It is run by state govts. I am a democrat, but am against universal health care, as it would be just another entitlement program that we could not pay for. We need to address the abuse in the medical field before considering another entitlement program. FYI, Medicare Part D, which gave presription drugs to the elderly, was one of the worst ideas ever and will be bankrupt in ten years under the current system.
I found this video to be very helpful and I was able to get much more information about Barton Home Care by exploring its excellent website.
"If a company requires initial payment from you in order to work for them, they are not legitimate."
There are a few legitimate data entry companies but are not hiring and have large waiting lists (1-2yrs). The majority of data entry jobs you seen online are scams. A real company will want you to have skills inc fast typing, may want you to know MS Excel, and will usually ask that you have high speed internet. Once in a long while you may found one online on a job website but thats rare.
If you do an advanced search on yahoo, you will find previous answers, sometimes the info on these is good as the info they gave is likely to have been verified if the answer was voted as 'Best'.

call all three credit bureaus inform them what happen they will give you a # to call this # is for the govt to report abuse and identity theft. in the meanwhile all three will investigate your claim to see if your telling the truth
I only skimmed this, too much useless information.
The website will not be liable, it was up to you to verify licensing. You should not have been able to get a building permit without licensing either. The building department usually checks.
Anyway, you contact your stats contractors board for help, they have a legal department that will help you.
As far as government handouts, you can check with the welfare department, not sure what kind of welfare you might qualify for.
Nice video. I’m looking for help for both my mother and father. Will give Tom a call today.
Excellent overview of the service provided and the integrity of this company. I would definitely trust my parents’ care to Barton Home Care.
