2 Home Improvements: Ceiling Lights

Here is a two-part article to help with your home improvement projects.

Home Improvements with Ceiling Lights

Ceiling lights come in many different varieties. Some of the most popular are track lights. These have a track, as you may have guessed, and that track can be put anywhere on the ceiling. There are lights that go on this track that can be moved and focused on different parts of the room. This type of ceiling lights allows a homeowner to have light where it is needed the most, and the flexibility to change them around when needed. They can even be used to highlight great art in a room, or to build a focal point.

In fact, lighting a room can be hard if you don’t know what you are doing. There are many different types of lighting ideas out there, and some people simply go with a single light in the center of the ceiling because they don’t want to bother, or they aren’t aware of other options. Lamps can give a different look, but there are many different types of ceiling lights that many fall in love with once they have them installed in their home. This is because they can do great things with a room that was once just blah.

There are other types of great ceiling lights as well. These are often recessed right into the ceiling and can also be focused on any point in the room. These often are not movable like track lighting, but can be just as wonderful if you have enough in the room. They tend to be a bit less in intensity, but that is a great look in many rooms. If you have a lot of glass and metal in your décor, these lights will highlight those things in a very attractive way. These, like track lights, can also be used to highlight other things in the room that you may want guests to notice when they walk into your home or a certain room.

No matter what type of ceiling lights you may want to try, you should always shop around for the best price. You can always get great deals in home improvement stores, but don’t forget to look around online to see what you can find. Deal with sites that have a good reputation, and make sure they use secure methods of shipping for your ceiling lights don’t arrive broken and unusable. Most are good at this though, as it is what they do every day. You may save money on shipping if you buy a few things and have them shipped together.

Ceramic Tile Home Improvement Tips

There are many different materials that can be used in building both homes and businesses. You can see that if you take a walk though any home improvement or building supply store. You can also find this huge variety if you look around on the Internet. For example, one thing that many like to have as an added touch to many homes and commercial buildings is ceramic tile. It certainly has many great uses, and it more versatile than you may think.

One great thing about ceramic tile is the number of different colors and designs you can get. Most will choose a certain hue, and then have a few with a pattern to place within a floor or a wall as accent points. You can find almost any color and any size, and some even have different textures. If you can’t find the ceramic tile that you need in one place, you are bound to find it somewhere else. Though it is most popular for foyers, kitchen, and bath, you can use it in almost any room of the home in some way or another.

Not everyone will want to install ceramic tile on their own, but it is something that most can do with a little practice. You have to have the right type of grout, which can be dyed to match the tile if you wish, and then you have to know how to prepare the surface. If you don’t do it right, the ceramic tile will fall off or become unstable soon enough. However, finding instructions is rather easy, and it is something anyone can learn. Your local home improvement store may even offer free classes that will teach you how to do it.

There are some dangers with ceramic tile however. If you are going to use it in a commercial building, you should be aware that it can be very slippery when it is wet. That means you should not use it where flooring might be wet and people could fall, unless you get a kind that has a lot of texture to it to prevent falls, or if you know you will be putting down rugs to keep footing secure. This can also happen in homes, so make sure you have rugs in the appropriate places so that no one slips on your beautiful new ceramic tile floor. If anything, avoid smooth tiles in any entry way, as that is where most falls can happen.

Husbands, when checking out at the Home Improvement store?
Which order do you want the cashier to check out your items? Is it caulk, screw, wood or is it wood screw caulk? Also, would you like the power tools checked out at the beginning or the end?

M&D Disclaimer-I am interested in the answers of husbands. Also of what wives believe their husbands would like.

I say go with the lighting, you are only going to be there a year, and whatever curtains you get might not fit the windows of the place you move to, much less match whatever decor you go with when you move in a year. If not having curtains really bothers you, you should try to do both. Check out clearence sales & close out stores for the light fixtures. If you see a light fixture in a store you like, write it down, check the measurements and see if you can find the same thing on ebay or online cheaper. Then you can check the clearance bins and closeout store (like big lots) for curtains. If you have nice blinds, you might want to consider just doing a scarf valance, you can find them for less than curtains, or make them yourself, and they can add just as much color.

Here you go — Amazon sells them (antique bronze drop with a white glass shade) and they are only $40:

Is that what you're looking for?

BTW, the previous suggestion would be a safety hazard and a code violation. You can't use a lamp socket as a direct wiring terminal.

Yes, Min-Wax makes a product called "PolyShades" that I use on circumstances like this regulary. The trick to a successful application is to know what to include, and how to apply it as it'll be splotchy and look like hell if you don't.

Using this straight from the can will drive you crazy when using a brush as each stroke that comes in contact with the one before it will grab and be considerably darker then the one before. . . that's the definition of splotchy. If you are going to brush this you need to use a good china bristle brush and add "Penetrol" to the Polyshades to eliminate the lift and drag of this product; the Penetrol will help not only keep a wet edge, but it will promote adhesion if there's a urethane or other clear finish. Another resource, if you get what's know as fish eye (a what appears to be a water drops marks in the product during or after application) is fish eye eliminator. Apply a test area without the fish eye remover to see if it is going to be an issue before adding it to the stain. The Penetrol is a must. I'm not certain of the pines current condition but I sand the wood finish with #320 paper, vacuum and then tack cloth before applying the stain; you can use what's called "No-Sand" or "Liquid SandPaper", but there's a time application parameter in using these, and really nothing beats actual sanding. In 9 out of 10 applications I'll spray this job as it provides the best finish.

Now, all this being said, I'm going to tell you that this is a tough job that requires a professional or professional ability to achieve an architectural grade finish with. I'll help you with it if you feel you want to give it a shot, but, there are other more DIY friendly ways to achieve good aesthetics with this room if you're willing to consider a solid type stain that willbe more like traditional painting for you. Kick it around and let me know. You can reach me here, or through my website which one of the internet addresses will appear at the bottom of my signature block below.

Wood ceilings & walls are common and a matter of design and taste. . . you see it alot in the Midwest, West and states like Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and particularly in rustic and log cabin construction.

And at my store we had some crazy bitch threatening to sue because we had regular birds. Claiming she would get the bird flu. This would make her have a hart attack. LOL

Lowe’s is the best!

the difference in culture. The difference in technological advancements and they most important difference in the engine, which drives our society. The aboriginal Indian culture is deeply lined with spiritual values which stressed and inter-active and synergistic approach to life on this planet, this no longer exists in our society except for ideologues. Without an evolution of consciousness, I'm afraid people won't be going green soon.

A bird in the hand is better than two at Lowes.

I prefer Home Depot.

the first is a wildlife rehabilitation center and in the interest of the raccoons would be able to give you some ideas, hints, etc of humane exclusions as well as within the guidelines of the law. They also may have a sub company strictly for excluding wildlife out of urban places w/a humane mindset although abiding by the law. (nuisance animals have to be euthanized in all cases. at least that's the law here.)
the second is your division of wildlife and I would think they would definately know the laws of what your landlord is responsible for along with raccoons carrying zoonotic diseases (contractable to humans) your landlord should pop right to it when he thinks of it being some sort of health code violation I'm sure!!!!.

All I can really think of would be to paint your ceiling a dark blue and buy the little sticky glow in the dark stars and stick them to your ceiling. You can find these at spencers or walmart or maybe even the dollar store. Then, in between the glow in the dark stars, use white paint and make small to large dots on the ceiling, they will show up a little in the dark.

Use a hacksaw, It will cut thru the metal as well as the plastic…..

High ceiling fans are never a good idea. They are way too much trouble to clean and never really do anything when it comes to moving air down to where you are.

If the ceiling is more then 8 feet, then its kind of a waste. Invest in a tasteful stand fan.

If the ceiling is low enough, fans are always in. You can always get a fan/light combo.

A junction box with a cover plate is all you need. If you hope to get an inspection or ever sell the place, make sure the box is connected to a rafter/joist, with the wire stapled according to your code (6-8 inches) away from the box as well.
A simple/cheap, anyone can do it.
If you want to go all-out, use electrical tape over the wire-nuts before putting the top on the junction box.
Little things now avoid anything further in the future.
