Today everybody is looking to save. Save money, of course, but also to save frustration and hassles. And, all the home remodeling ideas now must have those elements.
Today everybody is looking to save. Save money, of course, but also to save frustration and hassles. And, all the home remodeling ideas now must have those elements. Even though we’re all trying to cut back and become more frugal, we still want to create, to build and to improve our lives and our homes.

But what can be done on a limited or even nearly nonexistent budget?

Well, there’s actually quite a bit, if you’re willing to step out of your set plans and concentrate solely on adding value to your home and doing smaller, more focused projects. Sure, we’ve all been beat up some financially, but there are ways of fighting back.

For instance, when it comes to appliances and fixtures; new is nice, but there are many, many options out there that will improve the look and equity of your home and add a “gently cared for” attitude. I mean think about used or recycled items. Nobody has ever asked me if I bought a particular thing at a salvage yard after its been installed. And, if it works perfectly, who cares?

Look in Craigslist or simply Google “particular item your town” (ie. used fireplace insert Dallas TX) and be willing to flex a little. Also, see if there’s a salvage business close to you. Google “salvage building materials your town” or “used appliances your town.” Some larger cities even have more than one. Habitat for Humanity also has “ReStores” all over the country. If you’ve never been in one, you don’t know what you’re missing! Nice stuff, cheap.

Always buy your own materials. As a homeowner, you are considered the General Contractor. That means you’re the boss. Talk to your building contractor (if you’re going to hire one) and see if they’re willing to not mark up the materials and show receipts as they go. Most will, or at least sell them to you for what you could get them for from Home Depot. Get 3 bids and tell all the bidders what you’re doing if they ask.

Do as much of the work as you can. The people at the “big boxes” are usually more than willing to show you how to do things. A lot of them have actually worked in the industry. And, every remodel is made up of parts and pieces. You’d be surprised what you can do! Remember: most home improvements don’t return what it cost to do them unless you do the work yourself.

Be patient. Buy items out of season (furnaces and insulation in summer, AC and landscaping supplies in winter, etc.) and hire labor in the rainy season or winter when they’re hungriest. Also, if you’re planning a large remodel and can take your time, buy the individual items when they are on sale, gathering your materials and storing them in the garage until you’re ready.

Finally, don’t finance the project… even if you plan on putting your home on the market when you’re finished and pay off the loan then. In fact, unless you’re comfortable jumping into large projects, don’t even consider ones that need you taking out a loan.
Home improvement can lead to many small things in the home working more efficiently and easily than before. There are many ways to improve the current household appliances to a much more energy efficient ones without spending a fortune on them. Every elements and section of our homes should be supervised in an efficient way. Conservation of various energy resources is significant in determining our lifestyle. Firstly the circulation of air inside our house should be properly managed since the temperature and quality of air inside our homes greatly affect our health. All small chinks in our house should be eliminated, since it allows chilly and dry air to leak in while the warm humid air escapes out. Hence the temperature is greatly affected. We should block all tiny fissures through which wiring goes inside the wall or floor. Seal the chimneys with non insulating metal and cement. … Read the rest

To prevent entry of cold air use of tight fitted and insulating glass windows are preferred. Fibre glass batting or cellulose enhances the efficiency of cooling and heating system of our house to great extend. We should also keep our air vents clean for smooth flow of air.

Another important feature for home improvement and making it energy efficient is the power management. Working upon our power economy not only leads to a balanced and comfortable life but also cuts down our electricity bills to a great extent. We should use fluorescent lamps since they provide much more energy efficiency as compared to incandescent bulbs. Although, they are costlier than normal lamps, they turn out to be cheaper in the long run due to their durability and high efficiency. Use of automatic and mechanized thermostat regulates the temperature of our house automatically, due to which great amount of electricity and energy is saved. Now day’s hydraulic heating systems are in great demand due to their less power consumption. We should make a habit to switch off the lights when we leave our rooms. Construction of houses should be such that they utilize utmost natural light.

By practising water conservation we are in a way preserving and safeguarding the proper use of energy involved in various treatment processes of water. A great part of home improvement is a proper water circulation system in the home, making sure there is no leakage. We could keep a plastic water filled bottle or brick in our toilet tank to minimise the water content used in flushing. Insulation of water pipes present under sink by fibre glass is also an important technique in water conservation. We should not leave the water running while brushing our teeth. This habit will save a lot of water. Similarly vegetables used for cooking purposes should be dipped in a bowl of clean water rather than being directly washed under running tap water. Dishwasher should be used for washing dishes; similarly washing machines should be used for washing clothes. This not only saves water but also energy. We should check our washrooms and toilets for any seep-outs, and if any then should repair them immediately. Installation of water saving shower heads and taking shorter showers also minimize the wastage of bathing water.

Use of products that utilize solar energy can also contribute to energy preservation programme. People install solar panels that trap solar energy, which in turn is used in various household purposes. Some of the widely used products are solar cookers, solar calculators and solar garden lights. With so much energy crisis in our world we should indulge ourselves in energy saving habits. Not only they preserve energy resources, but also put our life at ease and trim down our expenditure.

Let’s face it-not everyone is a born construction worker. If you have spent a great deal of your life in rental homes, you have had a landlord upon whom you could rely for help in fixing areas around the home. Once you become a home owner, however, you also become the landlord so to speak, and thus you are responsible for maintaining your home. Some people who own houses with the purpose of reselling them must become skilled in all areas of home construction and remodeling. For all of these types of house owners, the home improvement video was created. You can improve your skill set in the comfort of your home, on your time schedule and at your own pace.

DIY videos are very popular because everyone would like to save a bit of money on everything from home improvement projects to building a new home. Once you become a home owner, however, you also become the landlord so to speak, and thus you are responsible for maintaining your home. For all of these types of house owners, the home improvement video was created. You can improve your skill set in the comfort of your home, on your time schedule and at your own pace.

DIY videos are very popular because everyone would like to save a bit of money on everything from home improvement projects to building a new home. This is why DIY videos were created, because they teach you how to perform tasks yourself and can thus save you money on your remodeling project.

If you are working on a whole-house project, you might want to start out with home building videos. Home building videos take you through the entire process, albeit on a superficial level, but they give you an overview of how a building project progresses, which will help you as you work through your own home rebuilding. Construction how-to videos will also cover aspects like framing and putting up dry wall. Roofing is technically challenging, but you can learn the basics of it from construction how to videos.

One popular area that a home renovation video will likely cover is help for the bathroom. A well-used room, it is a typical candidate for remodeling. Bathroom remodeling videos will cover electrical and plumbing issues found in the bathroom. You might be wanting to move light fixtures and electrical outlets in this room, and you can learn these types of activities from bathroom remodeling videos.

You might also want a home renovation video that focuses on the kitchen. This room does wear out fairly quickly from use, and thus a home renovation video with this room featured is very helpful for those facing the task of redoing the kitchen.

You can also find a home improvement video with a focus on painting and other decorative feature applications. These will be used through the home renovation, and you can learn new tips and techniques via a video on the subject.

You can find diy videos online at home renovation websites as well as home improvement stores; many libraries also offer them for check-out.

Is the family getting bigger, or is your home shrinking? As you welcome new additions to your family, you will find that the house you and your spouse bought is becoming less equipped to handle your needs. Perhaps the rooms are too small, or there aren’t enough to accommodate everybody who lives there. You are then faced with the option of selling and buying a bigger place, or adding on. These days, homeowners are turning more to the second choice for a variety of reasons, and it’s one you may wish to consider if you’re feeling cramped at home.

Is it better to consider adding a room to your existing house rather than search for a new one altogether? There are a number of reasons why homeowners are doing just that, and if you’re looking for reasons to do it yourself here are a few to keep in mind:

1) It’s not as expensive as you might think. Contractors may generally charge you a hundred dollars per square foot of room. So if you are interested in expanding a room you could be looking at a few thousand dollars’ worth of work, while a full 10′ x 10′ space will cost around ten thousand. In the long run, however, these improvements could be seen as more cost-effective than the expense involved in selling a home and buying another.

2) Room additions can add value. If you do decide to sell one day, that extra space could come in handy as a selling point. Many people like the idea of an extra room that doesn’t have to be used as a bedroom – like a library or office.

3) Room additions give you space to breathe. Naturally the idea of an addition is to give you room to place furniture, clothing, and other items, but you’ll find the process may also help de-clutter your mind. With more space to move around, you’ll feel less suffocated inside and may become more enthusiastic about decorating your home.

4) Room additions are versatile. If you have the proper permits, you can pretty much add anything on to your home – an all-purpose room or bedroom, a spa bathroom or play area. For older teenagers or adults living at home, a second door installed can permit for private entry.

Before you think about selling, take into account the possibilities of adding on to your present house. You may find it more economical and practical.

Following is a list of the top ten mistakes homeowners make when undertaking home improvement projects and tips on how to avoid them:

Do an online search of the contractor’s business and personal name. Check with local courts for judgments filed against them and with the Better Business Bureau for any consumer complaints.

Although a major home improvement can prove to be a rewarding project, it can also turn your life upside down if you are not prepared. I’ve heard of some worst case scenarios involving people who have lost their homes because they got in over their heads and others who ended up with incomplete project nightmares that cost them thousands of dollars to correct.

Following is a list of the top ten mistakes homeowners make when undertaking home improvement projects and tips on how to avoid them:

1. References. Do enough research and background checking to satisfy you. Walk away if the contractor is not willing to provide references from former clients. Do an online search of the contractor’s business and personal name. Check with local courts for judgments filed against them and with the Better Business Bureau for any consumer complaints. Look at previous work completed (in person). Check with material suppliers since a good contractor will have a long-standing relationship with suppliers. Contact other contractors who have worked with them before. Check their credit standing – contractors with bad credit are often disorganized and don’t manage their business well. Inquire about insurance, workers compensation and licensing.

2. Project management. You need one person to help you manage your project. Most issues occur when inexperienced homeowners try to manage their own project. A project manager is a single point of contact between the homeowner and other contractors and is responsible for scheduling and workflow.

3. Contracts. Make sure your contract is solid. As obvious as this may sound, failure to get a contract or signing an incomplete contract is one of the most common mistakes. Put all the details in writing – never take someone’s word for it. Following are items that should be included in the contract: (1) the full name of the company and the person you are doing business with and their contact information, (2) an addendum consisting of the complete set of plans, (3) an addendum consisting of the materials to be used, (4) the price of the goods or services, (5) the manner and terms of payment, (6) a description of the work to be performed, (7) a start date and an estimated completion date, (8) a default clause in the event either party defaults that specifies how damages will be calculated, (9) warranties and (10) signatures.

4. Warranties. Make sure you receive a warranty with detailed terms and conditions. Don’t accept a contract that simply states that all work is guaranteed. There is often confusion as to who is responsible for the warranty. Get the following in writing: (1) Who is backing the warranty? (2) What is covered and what is not covered? (3) How long is the warranty valid for? (4) What can void the warranty? (5) What is the process for placing a warranty claim?

5. Changes. During the project, you may change your mind on certain design aspects which may require more or less work from contractors. It is critical to document every change order and note the exact cost or savings. Changes should be signed and dated by all parties.

6. Plans. Get a clear description on what will be done, how it will be done and the materials to be used. For smaller projects, contractors can draw up plans. For larger and more complicated projects, find a qualified designer or architect. And, for example, if load-bearing walls will be altered, find an engineer to review the structural side of the plans.

7. Costs. Estimating costs tends to be a big problem because people do not make realistic comparisons. Homeowners may hire the contractor with the lowest price but that price may turn out to be much higher in the end. “Allowance items” tend to be the main culprit in estimating costs. For example, contractors may give you allowances for flooring, lighting or hardware that are artificially low. The bid looks enticing until you examine it closely. Request a line item for straight costs on materials and labor since some contractors mark up materials and labor so they can make a profit on it. Ask the contractor to pass along costs to you and to add a line item for their fee. This creates a more clear and honest assessment of the job.

8. Financing and payments. Before signing the contract, figure out how you are going to pay for your home improvement project. Make sure you maintain control of the money – don’t let your project manager or contractor control the money. This sounds obvious but many homeowners allow contractors to make draws on construction accounts only to realize that the draws were not used for the intended purpose. What does this mean? It means your contractor scored a new truck, you’re out of money and the project is incomplete. Tips: (1) don’t pay a lot of money up front, (2) pay when materials are delivered, (3) pay when work begins and (4) pay as work progresses. Pay only after work and materials are inspected and approved.

9. Inspections. Don’t wait until your home improvement project is almost complete to do the inspection. Plan phased inspections along the way so work doesn’t need to be re-done. Don’t rely on city and county building inspectors to protect you since the codes they enforce don’t guarantee quality (and they often miss things too!). Before paying for work, hire an independent inspector to do periodic phase inspections.

10. Materials. Stick with products that are tried and true. This rule especially holds true when it comes to windows, doors, framing materials, roofing products, concrete coverings, epoxy floors, plumbing, light fixtures and electronics. You don’t want to be the guinea pig that test runs the supposed latest and greatest new products or materials only to find out that these items don’t last or turn out to be fire hazards!

Question by mommyme: Home improvement?
Does anyone know how major home improvements can help the worth of your home. For example renovation of a bath– how much does it increase your home’s value??

Best answer:

Answer by bugs280
Generally, things like kitchen and bath upgrades, and energy conservation items, like high efficiency heating and cooling, and energy efficient windows have the greatest impact on home value. How much all depends on the real estate market in your area. I suggest you work with some real estate appraisers in your area and see what they suggest. You can also look at some homes for sale in your area. See what they have compared to yours, and what they are asking for the house. Don’t jump into a several thousand dollar renovation.

During this tight economic situation with the instability of jobs and lower non-refundable incomes today, many Americans are looking for options to lower their bills from their mortgages to personal credit cards and other expenses. Mortgage refinancing might be the useful tools to reduce amount outstanding and make home affordable.

Before you refinance your mortgage it is advice able that you understand most of the In’s and Out’s process. There are several situations where mortgage refinancing loan can be an advantage for distressing homeowners. Refinancing home means to simply take a new mortgage loan in place of an existing one. Refinance home loan is used to lower the monthly payments and thus make it affordable. The new loan has to have more favorable conditions than the existing loan.

There are many reasons why people prefer home mortgage refinance and the below given are the main reasons for refinancing:

• People prefer refinancing if they want to cash out some amount of equity in their home, thus taking a new loan and using the obtained cash for other expenses.

• When one want to take a new loan with short or longer repayment terms. Normally, a longer repayment terms implies to lower monthly payments with high interest over the life of the loan while shorter repayment is totally opposite.

Terms of the new loan

While considering the new home mortgage refinancing loans consider preparing some information regarding the current loan: interest rate and the number of years of the new loan.

Cost of the new loan:

One of the most vital factors in how long will it take to take back the costs of the refinance is the total cost of the new loan. Key calculations like the application fee, attorney fees, title search, local fees, credit check, inspection, document preparation and title insurance will also be included.

In return the calculator will tell what one knows, which is usually how much stand to save in the monthly payments with his new loan. It will also tell the total cost of the new refinancing home loans. And finally the total number of the months required getting the cost of refinance back. One should assure to prepare the data elements before using a home refinance calculator for his calculations.
PLEASE READ THIS VIDEO DESCRIPTION. When I watch this, I’m speechless, and tearful. This video is not mine–I found it elsewhere, and don’t know the creator or copyright owners. ***YOUTUBE: PLEASE DON’T TAKE THE VIDEO OR SOUNDTRACK DOWN. I have NOT submitted it for revenue sharing, but simply as a patriotic public service. Please respect that and leave the video up.*** Some military action is both abhorrent and necessary–I’m both old and young enough to know that. But we in modern America have forgotten the cost. In our video-game, media-saturated, narcissistic society of today, war has become just another policy football, just another budget wrangle. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, both businesses and the government urged civilians to conserve, to recycle, to contribute money (in taxes and war bonds), and to grow their own food. When the World Trade Centers were leveled, the government told us to go about our business, and that the most patriotic thing we could do was go out and consume more. My father was a marine in Vietnam, my uncle one in Korea, but they’ve never talked much about it. But after having two young daughters, and then losing one of my favorite students during his first month in Baghdad, war has become very personal for me. This video perfectly conveys one of the greatest costs of war–the separation of families. Particularly of parents and young children, who need their parent more at that time than at any other time of life. War is necessary at times …

Once in the couples home, officers discovered a small amount of marijuana and charged the Coopers with Class B misdemeanors, resulting in both their arrests. Each immediately bonded out of jail and paid a small fine. Days later, while Candis youngest son was visiting his father in east Texas, Child Protective Services contacted the Coopers, revealing that the incident could cost them not only custody of the boy, but also their freedom on felony child endangerment charges, writes Stephen C. Webster of True Slant, who has been following the case. On page five of the CPS case report, police level the shocking claim that the Coopers are unsuitable parents because they teach their children the government is out to harm them. On page six of the report, police accuse the Coopers of being aggressive to authority because they will …

The main goal of this website Refinanceitt.com is to get fastens up refinancing with good equitable information.

• In the mortgage refinance, one is able to qualify for a lower interest rate than the prior one. This is because you are having a good credit score or the interest rates are usually down to where they were first when one has taken his existing mortgages.

If a person wants to refinance his home loan and he is looking for a refinancing it with a home mortgage calculator than there are three types of data which he needs to prepare using a refinance calculator.

The term period of his existing loan:

To use the calculator, one needs to prepare the following data about his existing loan: balance left on the existing mortgage, current monthly payment, years left on current loan and current interest rates.

The mortgage refinance calculator available at refinanceitt.com is a free and essential tool to help you practically decide what would be the exact monthly mortgage payments and help you to decide if refinancing is the right choice for you or not.
