She’s reached an age where daily assistance may be necessary and you’re a 1,000 miles away. How do you manage this situation without picking up and moving your family or your mother? If this scenario sounds familiar, remote care giving might be the answer.

These scenario plays out each and every day in thousands of American’s lives. “I had relocated to Florida in 1985 and my mother followed shortly after. In 2000 I relocated back to Pennsylvania to start a life with a new wife and family. My mother stayed and many questions arose. What do I do if she cannot live day-to-day being able to care for herself? How can anyone take care of a loved one so far away?”

Does your loved one need assistance with walking?

Has their physical and/or emotional health been declining?

Are they able to prepare nutritious daily meals?

Are they able to shop for themselves?

Are they able to manage their bills and financial responsibilities?

Are they taking their medications on time?

Are they still able to drive safely?

Are they in need of companionship?

Are they able to dress and groom themselves?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, professional home care might be an option for you. When considering agencies, choose one that can offer more than basic homemaker services, including dressing, bathing and other hygienic activities. Because not all states require licensing, be sure to check that the agency is bonded, insured and licensed.

For piece of mind for you and your loved one, understand the caregiver’s background and experience. Elder home care agencies should be able to provide you this along with conducting a criminal background check on its employees. You also should be able to meet with the caregiver before you agree to services to make sure that personalities match and you are comfortable with the service they provide.

Since home care services are non-medical, they currently are not covered by Medicare. But you do have options. Elder home care services can be paid individually or by long term care insurance. Often, funds from associations are available as well. For example, contact the organization that is involved with the illness that your loved one is afflicted with. Funds are sometimes available for their members.

Veterans and their spouses might qualify for the Disability Pension for Aid and Attendance. Others decide to take out a reverse mortgage. Whatever your situation, the proper research can determine the best route for financing care.

Most importantly, stay in contact with your loved one and the people involved in their care. Establish periodic phone calls and visit when you are able. Conversation shows you care whether you are in the same room or across the country.

There are many different elder care options available today. One option that you may want to consider is elderly home care. It allows parents or a loved one to remain at home, in familiar surroundings, and still get the assistance that they need. Often, caregivers include family, friends, or caregiving professionals that provide a wide range of senior home care services. This can be an ideal situation if you are caring for elderly parents or overseeing their care, where their primary needs are non-medical care.

In this type of setting, care can range from someone stopping in periodically, to a live-in caregiver that provides 24 hour care. Some examples of non-medical elderly home care may include: preparing meals or help with feeding, assistance with bathing and grooming, light housekeeping, assisting with medication, grocery shopping, bill paying or running errands.

In our particular caregiving situation, family members have teamed up to provide much of the home care for my mother-in-law, who has advanced Alzheimer’s disease. However, at times, we have enlisted the help of friends, our church family, and companies specializing in elderly home care services to provide for her needs. Even if your family is well equipped for caregiving, its important to be familiar with some of the senior home care services that are available today. Taking advantage of these services may give you the occasional day off or vacation that you need, without putting undo stress on your family or friends.

Even if you have other family members or friends that assist you in caring for a loved one, there are times when they are not available. At these times, being familiar with companies or caregivers that specialize in providing elderly home care can be important. Each local area normally has companies that offer a wide range of elderly assistance services. Normally, you can find these online by searching for the word “caregivers.” However, here are some nationwide, senior care service providers, that you may want to consider.

Visiting Angels – Specializes in non-medical home care services for the elderly, allowing them to maintain as much independence as possible in familiar surroundings. They have over 300 offices across the country. Their website is: www.visitingangels.com.

These are just a few of the many resources that are available for today’s caregivers. Over the years we have been blessed to have family members and close friends that have teamed up with us to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. However, utilizing other caregiver resources has given us much needed breaks, while still providing excellent care.

How to Choose a Senior Home Care Agency

Most of us hope we will never be faced with the need for senior care services for ourselves or a loved one. It is in the same category as “fire and flood insurance” – something that happens to other people. However, we still buy it, just in case. And then we forget about it. The reality is, tornadoes do hit. And the best insurance, as they say, is preparation.

Life expectancy rates are increasing (a newborn today in the U.S.A. has a life-expectancy of age 100), and with advances in medical care, Americans are living longer than ever before. While Medicare does provide for health care services for seniors, it does not provide for long-term care services.

Because of this, many seniors opt for senior care services in their own home, especially if only part-time care services are needed. This is often the situation after major surgery or when an age-related disease begins to develop, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease.

How do you know where to turn for quality senior home care?

As a former owner of a senior home care agency for 7 years, I have found that you can easily separate the wheat from the chaff by following a few guidelines when choosing an agency.

First, make sure the agency hires their Caregivers as employees. This provides you with the added benefits of Worker’s Compensation Insurance and Unemployment Insurance. These are both considered part of payroll taxes and are included in your fee. There are many stories about families who hired Caregivers and then discovered later that they were responsible for taxes that were not paid or sued for an injury a Caregiver suffered while providing care services. A Senior Home Care Agency takes responsibility for the liability for any on-the-job injuries as the employer and provides for all payroll taxes as a professional business. The Senior Home Care Agency will also provide Fidelity Bond Insurance which will protect you in the event of theft. The agency must follow certain procedures when hiring in order to maintain these valuable insurance coverages (background checks, active supervision and training will be required). By having these procedures in place, safety and quality can be maintained.

Next, make sure the Senior Home Care Agency provides regular “check-in” visits on the care services. A quality agency will have a Nurse Care Manager or Supervisor stop by to make sure the client and Caregiver are a good match and that all the care needs are being met. The frequency of these visits will depend upon the number of hours of care provided each week. You should expect check-in visits to occur every two-weeks under full-time care.

Finally, make sure the agency creates and manages a “Plan of Care” for the senior. This will include details on a daily routine and the job duties for the Caregiver.

Be sure to stay very involved with the agency during the first month of service to make sure the caregiver and the senior are getting along and communicating their needs.

If you do not live in the same city as the senior who needs care or if your family and career obligations prevent you from being available for day-time doctor appointments, you may want to consider hiring a Geriatric Care Manager.

Home care providers for the elderly can fit your needs depending upon your situation and budget. Make a list of the specific needs of elderly care you are looking for and questions to ask the home care providers.
Home Care Providers Checklist:
•   Rehabilitation/Therapy- Physical or occupational therapy required, improving or retaining function (range of motion, physical therapy following an injury), speech therapy or help swallowing (due to a stroke, Parkinson’s disease or ALS) respiratory therapy, or help getting around the house or using assistive equipment?
•   Household Chores– Help to do simply chores and prepare meals.
•   Personal Care Assistance –Assistance for personal hygiene, bathing, eating, dressing, lifting, and getting out of bed.
•   Nighttime Care- Elderly care for hours in the night in case of emergency.
•   Transportation Assistance- Provide for transportation to appointments, shopping, activities. Special transportation needs for wheelchair assistance.
•   Companionship- Personal companionship to combat loneliness and memory loss.
Questions to ask the Home Care Providers:
•   How are their employees chosen and screened to be home care providers and what are their qualifications?
•   How long has your agency been home care providers? Do you have references?
•   Can your agency provide the services I need as home care providers? Can a medical evaluation or consultation be done? Are there regular consultation follow-up and service evaluation meetings?
•   What is the minimum and maximum number of hours per visit that is required?
•   Is your agency bonded and have appropriate insurance for home care providers to cover theft and malpractice?
•   What are your fees? Talk extensively about fees and what is included and what is considered as extra charges and overtime. Is Medicare and Insurance accepted? Find out what your coverage is through your insurance providers and cross reference coverage.

Quality home care providers will be prepared to help you through the process of evaluating your elderly care needs. They will have the answers to these basic questions. Choosing the right home care providers is important to your piece of mind and to the quality of care that your loved one is receiving. You want only the best home care providers to help you along the way.
